A Simple Source of Energy

I See You

This week, my prestigious internal medical Doctor had referred me to a surgeon replacing a lens in my eye, Doctor Mah has done over 10,000 of these procedures and he was raving about how gifted he is .

When we met for the actual surgery I was enveloped by confident and competent professionals who dispelled any anxiety and  I was fortunate to have a great experience. On my check-up today I was in Doctor Mah’s office, he has a swarm of staff milling around him, a timing device clearly counting down to his next appointment. His wall adorned with diplomas from years and years of education and countless hours of tenure to culminate him being a master of his field.

I notice things, its what I do, Ive noticed a few seismic cultural shifts, we have a personal digital ‘bubble’, crosswalks have red and green lights installed on the crosswalks to adjust to the head-down culture. Over the last few years our isolation bubbles have been galvanized by an anxiety inducing the global pandemic.

We have drifted from a peninsula to a defensive island. As leaders, vibrant members of our community we have the opportunity to reach people on their islands. Being seen, acknowledged or validated for deliverables, attitude and positive contributions, by those you are surrounded by can have a unifying, spirt-lifting opportunity.

If you see something say something

Back at my Ophthalmologists office, I suddenly shifted our Doctor patient dynamic, I suddenly said, “I hope over the holiday break that you take some time for yourself to appreciate your mastery and in that time I would imagine that as a smart ambitious man, you’ll discover nuanced goals for your upcoming year.” That was it, I simply saw him and spoke on what I saw. He physically sat up in his chair and said ‘well I am taking time off with family, but I hadn’t thought of taking time for myself, I will do that’.

RESOURCES

There is a “tiny indie film” that is ricocheting around the world right now, the 192 minute movie had several moments where the same small sentence was uttered… “I See You”. I was hit with the sledgehammer of our yearning to be seen, whether it is my father not knowing me anymore, a beleaguered spouse feeling overwhelmed and unappreciated, parents not respecting their child, or a team member feeling the pressure of the job, while lacking the support of empathetic leadership.

I challenge you to test this out, have your vocal cords vibrate to ‘catch people when they do something right”, I promise you that you will observe a tangible and contextual response to you seeing them.
